Thanksvember 2011: my students

From one of my students after class:

I am really enjoying coming to your classes.  You are so fun and you make me feel comfortable to talk in English.  I am not afraid to make mistakes in front of you.  Finally, I don’t hate English Class anymore.

I became an English teacher so I could move to Europe.  I knew living in Madrid was going to be amazing.  What I never expected was how my job would affect me.  I thought it would just be something to pay the bills. After each class, I am discovering more and more how lovely and talented my students are.  Their determination to learn and practice the English language is absolutely shocking to me.  We all know I never cared to practice my Spanish.  Case and point: ham hock when I wanted pulled pork.

For the most part, I teach in companies all over Madrid.  From advertising agencies, to pharmaceutical companies and even a very large motor company that happens to rhyme with ‘sword’.  I also teach private students in the evenings.  These are college-age students looking to learn English to prepare for the job hunt after graduation.  However, it doesn’t matter which company or which student I am with.  They are all so different, yet so rewarding.  There is no way to explain the excitement I get when I hear a student use the English language in conversation the way I have taught it.  I can really see the fruits of my labor changing people’s ability to communicate.

I am very thankful for this experience to meet new people and make a difference in their life.  My students are absolutely incredible and I am looking forward to getting to know them much better throughout the coming year.

HEY YOU GUYYYYYYS!

Goonies? Anyone? No? ok.

So, you might be asking yourself, “what has Sarah been up to lately?”  Or not.  That’s fine.  Either way, you are here and I will tell you what I have been up to.

1.  All of my classes are officially in session which means I actually have things to do each day instead of roam around the streets.  Even though the latter is way more exciting, it doesn’t pay very well.  In fact, I usually come back with less money than I started with.  So financially speaking, this is a good thing.

2.  I signed up for a 5K and 10K race here in Madrid.  I know I am a big advocate of HIIT and not distance running, but honestly I needed some sort of goal.  My motivation starting around February is usually the new line of bathing suits from Victoria’s Secret.  That catalog gets me every time!  From the second I open my mailbox, the rays of sunshine and the pages upon pages of abdomens and boobs induce me into a swimsuit coma where I silently repeat to myself “get your ass out of the house and move a little so you can wear these skimpy-and-sexy-yet-nearly-$100 pieces of polyester”.  Speaking of, in case you haven’t noticed (or don’t check every three days like I do) they have already released their 2012 preview of suits even though summer ended like last weekend.

If this cute bathing suit doesn't get you off the couch, I don't know what will

Anyways, since we are quickly making our way through Fall and into Winter, the thought of wearing a bikini not only gives me goosebumps but quickly reminds me of my favorite reason for the season: not shaving my legs.  Yes, boys.  That is the real reason women are so jolly around winter time.  We spend about 8 months out of the year with that damn razor practically glued to our hands and taking twice as long in the shower to make sure that you have something smooth to brush up against.  But where there is cold, there are leggings. And boots.  And boot socks.  And all things that cover up those legs that have now gone pale and prickly.  And for that, we celebrate the Winter season.

OFF TOPIC.

I signed up for the two races to give me a good reason to get out in the cold and do something with myself.  Since I don’t have a gym membership here in Madrid, it gets quite repetitive to workout in my home and I’m sure my neighbors would appreciate me slamming that salt bag somewhere other than above their apartment.  So I decided to incorporate an old love of mine, running, into my workout schedule.

So I’ll keep you all updated with my training.

3.  I have decided to host Thanksgiving Dinner here at my apartment and have wasted spent multiple hours searching for the perfect Paleo recipes.  So far on the menu: some sort of bird (don’t know if I can find a whole turkey here), mashed sweet potatoes, broccoli & cauliflower casserole, herb gravy, and grain-free pun’kin pie ya’ll.  I will be posting my recipes prior to Thanksgiving so you can try them out with your family!  The holidays are not a good reason to let your health slip!  Let everyone else be gluttonous while you stay fit, trim, and sexy.

4.  Also, in lieu of the holiday season, the whole month of November here on Life With a Fork will be dedicated to giving thanks.  Everyday I will be posting about something I am thankful for as well as keeping up with some of my current topics like random things I eat and my crazy European life.  Stay tuned for that!

my TEFL experience

I feel like I owe it to my school and my peers to do a post on my TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) experience here in Madrid.  If you know me in real life (as opposed to this fake virtual life), you will know that my corporate background and degree have absolutely nothing to do with a teaching career of any sort.  But if you know me in real life or in this virtual life, you will know that I took a big leap into this not knowing what to expect but certain that I was making a serious change in my life and I was ready to embrace new experiences from all angles.  I can honestly say this past month was a complete one-eighty from where I was 30 days ago.

I came to Madrid (3 days later than expected) with no home, no friends, and not a damn clue as to what the hell I was doing becoming a teacher.  Needless to say, I found an amazing flat with great roommates and it was all rounded off with an absolutely incredible TEFL school experience.  The past four weeks of my life were spent either in school, working on school, walking to school, or thinking about school.  I can honestly say that I worked harder in the past four weeks than I ever did in college (sorry, Mom) or in my previous job.  However, while it was extremely intense (and downright annoyingly so at times), I wouldn’t have chosen any other school or route.  TtMadrid is an exceptional program with absolutely brilliant teachers.  The methodology they use to submerse the students in the world of teaching is directly related to how we will take the lessons we’ve learned and bring them to life in the classroom.  Every technique they taught, they used in the classroom.  We were pushed outside of our comfort zone often and much to over-prepare us for the experiences we would face once we left the doors of the school.  We were forced (and I say ‘forced’ because none of us wanted to do this at first) to teach a total of six classes of actual students prior to our certification and that is only one of the many projects and assignments we were to complete in such a short time.  To put it nicely, the course is tough.

But I couldn’t have done it without my peers.  I met some of the most amazing people over the past few weeks from all over the world and we have created a little family for ourselves.  It’s bittersweet thinking that Monday I won’t be walking to school and seeing them or stressing over lesson plans together.  I do know that we will always have a strong bond because we went through it together.  Through HELL, that is.  I am so proud of every single person that went through that course with me and I wish them all the best of luck in the future even though I know most of us will continue to stay close while so far from our homes.

If you are at all interested in quitting that shitty job of yours and doing something completely different, I strongly suggest you look into the TtMadrid program.  I can not speak highly enough of the course and I encourage anyone who is wanting to make a big change in their life to consider teaching English as an option.  You can visit their site here and no, I am not getting paid for this post (although I will gladly accept any monetary donations to the cause).

our goal cards from the 1st week that have been succefully accomplished

p.s.  I might not use correct grammar and punctuation in any of my posts and I understand that as a proper teacher now, it is expected of me to practice what I preach.  But commas are fun and so is inaccurate conjunction usage.

harry potter and the prisoner of TEFL school

I’m pretty sure I have mentioned in a previous post that I was assigned the topic of Harry Potter for one of my lessons this week.  I obviously can not be bothered to check, so if I haven’t mentioned it, well, there you have it.  Allow me to go into a bit of more detail regarding the specifics of the assignment.  The actual topic (word for word) is this:

“Harry Potter:  Have you seen the most recent movie?  What did you think of the movie?  What was your favorite scene?  Would you see the next one when it comes out?”

First of all, I have never seen the movies.  Secondly, I have also never read any of the books.  And third, to my knowledge, there will not be another movie coming out from this series.  Anyways, as you can imagine, I spent the majority of Saturday and Sunday agonizing over this ridiculous topic and practically pulling my hair out trying to come up with some sort of cohesive plan.  It wasn’t until about 11:30 last night that I made any sort of headway.  Needless to say, I was absolutely dreading the class this afternoon and was completely lacking confidence.  Given the phrasing of the topic, I was lead to assume that at least one person in my class would have seen this movie and have some sort of opinion on it. Boy, was I wrong.  Not only had no one in the class seen the movie or read the books, one fine gentleman named Enrique told me that he hated Harry Potter so much it made him want to fall asleep.  This all came to the surface within the first five minutes of my fifty-minute class.

“fuck.”

The seconds felt like minutes and the minutes felt like hours (or however the saying goes).  Basically, it was a horrible disaster and it felt like a plane spiraling downwards, engulfed in flames, and hitting everything in its way before crashing into the ground.  At least that’s how it felt to me.  My feedback session with the moderator went surprisingly better than I had expected.  Apparently, the fact that I stuck to my written lesson plan to a T and didn’t waiver was extremely impressive in her eyes given my distaste for the assignment.  Looking back on it and putting it into context, I don’t know why I was stressing about it so much.  Yeah, the topic was complete shit.  But at the end of the day, it’s just teaching English.  And if there is anything I have perfected in this life, it is speaking English.  Or just talking in general…

sunday and the 1st class

After the lovely evening out with my classmates, I pretty much locked myself in the house all day Saturday to finish my projects.  I’m very glad I did this, because by the time Sunday afternoon came along, I was able to take a nice little (8 mile) stroll to Retiro Park.  I had yet to visit but everyone continued to rave about how amazing and gorgeous it is.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, but I got way more excited to see a body weight gym at the park by my apartment.  Anyways, I snapped a couple photos along the way.

Monday comes along and the leisurely attitude from Sunday has pretty much disappeared.  I had to turn in my first big project and teach my first class.

Project turned in.  No problem.  I walk in to my first teaching lesson extremely confident and prepared…..

….and I walked out feeling like  a moron and apparently 10 minutes early (unbeknownst to me).

And that was only a one-on-one lesson! I can only imagine how my first real class is going to go on Wednesday.  Needless to say, after preparing all weekend and worrying all day about a seemingly shit lesson plan I had created, there is no work getting done tonight.  In fact, I am laying in bed as we speak (type? read? whichever).  The whole day just completely exhausted me so I will just have to refocus tomorrow.

In other news, I have an international phone number (which I will not be posting on here) so that is pretty neat.  Although my ghetto unlocked Blackberry has decided I should be able to do everything but connect to my email or facebook.  I mean, what else is a Blackberry good for anyways?  My roommate Santi was kind enough to take me to the cell phone place and literally did all the work for me.  He merely told me when to sit and sign.

So that’s all the updates for today.  You can read my other blog for all food and gastrointestinal updates.  Sounds intriguing doesn’t it?
